人類の適応や進化を研究する場合、成体の比較だけではなく、成長過程を明らかにすることは重要である。ところが、成長研究は、既に近代化を経験した欧米や日本社会に限定され、人類の変異の研究に欠かせない伝統社会についてはほとんど行なわれていない。伝統社会の成長研究を困難にしている大きな要因の1つは、生年月日が不明で、人々の年齢がはっきりしないことである。生年月日不明の集団に対する成長研究の方法として、これまで試みてきたのは、村人全員の出生順位から年齢を推定して成長曲線を推定したり、一定間隔(通常は1年間)で2回の測定を行なって、ロジスチック式による成長曲線の推定を行なうなどである。ところが、これらの方法で推定された成長曲線がどの程度信頼できるのかは、まだ十分には検討されていない。成長曲線推定の妥当性や、対象者数の違いによる推定成長曲線の信頼度の変化を検討するためには、既に報告されている年齢の明らかな縦断的成長データを利用して、モン カルロ法により対象者数を様々に変化させて、コンピュータ・シミュレーションを行う必要がある。そこで、既に報告されている(身長などの)測定データの中から、シミュレーションに適した(対象者数が多く、測定の信頼性が高く、年齢の明らかな)縦断的成長データがあるかどうかを調べた。日本人の成長データには適したものはなったが、アメリカ人とイギリス人では成長研究の中に利用できるものを見出した。平成4年度科学研究費補助金は第2次分の交付であったため、コンピュータ入力の開始は遅れたが、作業は順調に進んでおり、既にアメリカ人の成長データの入力は終了した。今後、残りの成長データ入力を完了させた後、まず身長のシミュレーションを試みる予定である。
