研究代表者は1980年から1994年まで、パプアニューギニアの諸部族(高地の山地オク族、山麓部のサモ・クボ族、低地のギデラ族、島嶼部のマヌス)を対象として人類生態学的調査を実施し、環境の多様性と身体のサイズや体格との関連を分析してきた。また、他のメンバーと共に活動調査や食物・栄養摂取調査も行っており、それぞれの結果はすでに公表されている。しかし、生体計測結果、活動調査結果、食物・栄養摂取調査結果をまとめた総合的分析はなされていない。そこで、これまで別々に処理されていた生体計測、活動調査、食物・栄養摂取調査の諸データを集めてコンピュータ入力し、すべてのデータを総合的に分析した。高地の山地オク族、山麓部のサモ・クボ族、低地のギデラ族、島嶼部のマヌスの生体計測結果、活動調査結果、食物・栄養摂取調査結果のすべてを集め、調査結果のデータをコンピュータ入力した。次にFORTRAN言語を使用してデータを加工し、SASなどの統計パッケージを用いて多変量解析を行い、身体のサイズや体格と活動、食物・栄養摂取との関連を検討した。さらに、アフリカのピグミー族と共に低身長部族の代表の一つである山地オク族に焦点をあて、低身長の原因を生態学的要因から探求した。身長は遺伝性が強いが、栄養状態などの生活条件による影響も無視できない。自然環境条件、栄養摂取量、身体活動量によって、どの程度低身長化を説明できるかを重回帰分析などを用いて解析した。
