Quantification of plasma fibrinogen concentration by quartz crystal viscosity sensor was investigated. At-cut crystal was used as viscosity sensor with a well-type cell in a liquid phase. The surface of quartz crystal was precoated with fibrinogen to protect the bonding of endogeneous fibrinogen in the plasma.The assay was initiated by the addition of thrambin into reaction mixture.The resonant frequency change was monitored by using a well-type cell, oscillator and frequency counter. The resonant frequency decrease due to the increase of viscosity by gelation of fibrinogen converted to fibrin.The proposed method is simple, rapid, specific and accurate at the lower range.Results obtained in proposed system showed good linearity over range 50-400 mg/dl. The comparison of proposed method with routine method used yielded a correlation coefficient ; gamma=0.702 and regression curve ; Y=1.89X(proposed method) - 110.21(n=20).Reference interval of plasma fibrinogen concentration from healty adults has in the range of 170-390 mg/dl. Reproducibilities(CVs) was between 2.29% and 7.97% in plasma. The preliminary studies suggested that a quartz crystal resonator is useful for the measurement of gelation of plasma coagulation factors in the liquid phase.
