社会をあげて運動不足病などと言われてすでに久しいが、このことはまた逆の見方をすれば今日ほど健康生活ということに焦点があてられ、重んじられていることはあるまい。道路を歩いていると70歳80歳代の人のジョギング姿もみかけるし、体育館等での体力テストを受けている光景もみかける。体力テストも、以前とは違って、今では広く普及し気軽に受けられるという雰囲気が出て来た。自分の体力レベルを的確に知って、この上に立って運動処方へと結びつく、標準化された体力テストの開発が今こそ急務であると言えよう。私は、これまで7年間にわたってOBインターハイ(旧制高校卒業生)参加者の体力テストを実施し、ここから種目ごとの年齢別・身長大中小別5段階評価表を作成することができた。しかし、この対象は男性のみであり、また昔陸上競技を行っていた、同年齢の人たちに比べると体力レベルの高い人たちである。一般の人たちはどうか。女性はどうか。こうした視点から、高齢者の体力テストバッテリーの開発が本研究のねらいである。調査は、立川市の70歳以上の男女250名を抽出し、OBインターハイ体力テスト(身長、体重、垂直とび、握力、立位体前屈、肺活量)及び開眼片足立ちテストを実施した。同時に質問紙法による体力意識・スポーツ意識の調査をも合わせて実施した。これらの相関分析の結果、男女別・年齢2歳きざみ別・(身長3段階別)の5段階評価表、及び各種目得点に重みづけを施した合計得点から体力年齢表を作成するまでに至り得た。発育の旺盛な中学・高校段階のみならずこの年齢層においても、男女別・年齢別はもちろんのこと、身長の大小を考慮した評価が合理的であることが認められた。
