Waldfogel(1948)は、大学生に0歳から8歳の誕生日までの自伝的記憶の想起を求め、想起数と想起事象に随伴する感情カテゴリのタイプ(快・不快・中立)とによって幼児期の想起の特徴について検討している。本研究では彼の報告した以下の2点について再検討を加えた。1)想起数は男女とも加齢(事象生起年代)の関数として増大する。そしてこの加齢による想起数の増加曲線は、言語の獲得数によって描かれた曲線と良く一致していた。2)随伴感情によって想起内容を快・不快・中立に分類すると、それらの感情比率は、ほぼ5:3:2を示し、事象生起年齢ごとに感情比率を求めた場合にも、同様の比率が得られた。本研究では、Waldfogel(1948)の実験から約50年の年月を隔てて異なる文化圏において、彼が報告した0歳から7歳代までの自伝的記憶に関すると想起傾向と同様の結果が再現されうることを確認した。ただし、本研究では大学生による0歳から10歳の誕生日までの自伝的記憶想起実験において、8歳代以降に想起数の明確な減少を確認した。この結果に対して、児童期の自伝的記憶が小学校入学等の環境変化とそれへの慣れによる影響を受けるとする作業仮説を提出した。この仮説は、大学生による6歳から15歳の誕生日までの自伝的記憶想起実験において、小学校入学年度と中学校入学年度に想起数のピークが認められたことから、つまり環境変化の生起年度以降における想起数の明確な減少が再度確認されたことから支持された。しかしながら、想起事象に対する事象生起年代別に行なった感情分類の結果から、児童期においては、想起数の増減は想起の質(想起事象に対する感情比率)には影響しておらず、中学校入学年次と卒業年次においてのみ快感情の減少が認められた。

The number of memories increases and the quality of memories (the ratio of memories to feelings) affects the number of years of middle school enrollment and the number of years of graduation.
