今年度は第四共和制研究の準備段階として占領期を主に研究対象とし、その結果下記の3点が明らかになった。1.一九世紀以来フランスにおける帝国意識の主たる駆動力は、植民地有用感と、それを倫理的に正当化する「文明化の使命」感だった。2.だが植民地に利害をもつ政官財界の努力にもかかわらず、主に有用感の欠落のためにフランス国民は第二次世界大戦まで植民地に対してほとんど無関心だった。「文明化の使命」論が建前として「平和的」植民地拡張・統治論であるという事情もあり、植民地の拡張や防衛が問題になった際にも、好戦的愛国主義が国民の心を広くとらえることはなかった。一九三〇年代の経済恐慌も国民意識を大きく変えるにはいたらなかった。第二次世界大戦前、「文明化の使命」論は国民の間に広く浸透していたとしても、植民地の有用性については必ずしも国民的合意が得られていたわけではなかったのである。3.植民地関心の絶頂期は、敗戦と占領、解放を経た一九四五年だった。敗戦と占領の民族的辛苦は、フランス帝国内の被抑圧民族に思いをはせる契機をフランス国民に与える可能性を内包していた。しかし同時にそれはフランス国民に、(1)多くの物を失った自国の手元に残る価値ある物こそ植民地であるという思いを培い、(2)対独屈辱感や対米英ソ劣等感の代償として優越願望の成就を植民地支配に求めさせ、(3)「野蛮」なドイツ(英米)像と対比される形で「文明」的フランス像の自覚を深化させて植民地支配の正当意識を育みかねないものでもあった。前者の心情を根付かせる有力なオピニオン・リーダーの不在のため、結局国民意識の主流は後者に流れたのである。

The image of "civilization" is deepened and the legitimate consciousness of planting land is cultivated. The former is a powerful emotion, the latter is a mainstream of national consciousness.
