今回特に「泰西王侯騎馬図」所収、神聖ローマ帝国皇帝、ルドルフII世と考定されている騎馬人物を中心に、広義の図像学乃至は図像解釈的視点より研究を進めた。最も基本と考えられる文献学的考察を機軸に、あわせて西欧の宗教画、肖像画に並行、類似の諸要素を検索、復元考察することにより、恐らくは吉利支丹であったろう画工の、ルネサンス絵画習得の痕跡を跡付け、さらに南蛮画といわれる洋風画の背景、見方についても考察を進めた。例えば神戸本の神聖ローマ帝国皇帝図では、16世紀甲胄の典型である喉当ての描写が無く、16世紀甲鎧にローマ時代の大外套、胴鎧thoraxを着用させたため、通常存在すべき“ひだ襟"が割愛されている(原図とされるブラウの地図上縁図像には描写されている)。その他肩甲に見られる獣面は、ローマ皇帝愛用の胴鎧、ヘラクレスの「ネメアの獅子」の図文に考定すべきもので格別の意味を有していたものと考えられる。ここには16世紀とローマ時代が複合されたハイブリドな形状が描出されていることになろう。同時代の宗教画にしばしば行なわれる様式に等しい。「レパントの戦い」に於いて確認される。但し、騎馬人物の単体が結合体である例は、南蛮美術の他には見られないであろう。着衣、武具、馬の形状について各々の観察を進める中、特にMigel de Cervantes Saavedra;“EL INGENIOSO HIDALGO DON QUIJOTE DE LA MANCHA"を文献資料として、騎士像に関しては、西欧に於ける王侯肖像画の意味、象徴するところ-カトリック協会の顕然たる示威的表象であることが明瞭となった。初期洋風画、南蛮画の図像構成は“何を規範としたか"について興味尽きないところであるが、伝統の基本的図像構成の踏襲の実態は、単に形態にとどまるものではなく、画像の象徴性、宗教的意味合いを深く追求するすることによってはじめて真の史料的価値に肉迫するものと改めて確信した。
