项目摘要

東家本「マリア十五玄義図」は大正9年に大阪の民家から発見された。イエズス会セミナリオ画派による彩色絵画で、当時の描画技法を伝える数少ない作品の一つである。本研究は画材研究と模写により描画技法を解明し、西洋画受容のあり方を探る。作品調査で支持体を竹紙とほぼ特定し、近似紙を復元した。竹は硬く紙原料にする過程で叩くと短繊維になる。表面は均一だが、実験で部分的な"抜け"が起きる。ドーサを引いても、周辺部より絵具を多く吸い、一部暗色化して滑らかにグラデーションが描けない。日葡辞書に"提げ槌:紙を打ち叩くもの"とあることから、復元紙に打紙を施した。すると紙は締まり"抜け"が減少し鮮明で長い線が引けた。この紙に、蛍光エックス線分析結果を参考にした顔料を用いて、混合技法で模写した。その結果本図は原田家本の作者とは異なる可能性が高いことが解った。このような作品が複数人により計画的に量産されたと考えられよう。年末には長崎でローマジェズ教会の油絵が公開された。「元和五年殉教図」、「元和八年殉教図」、「イエズス会士殉教図」を調査した結果、従来油絵といわれる「元和五年殉教図」と「元和八年殉教図」が本研究と同じく竹紙様に描かれた混合技法であることが確認できた。「イエズス会士殉教図」はキャンバスに油絵で異なる。そして「元和」殉教図2点の中央の殉教者の顔や服に、特に京大本「マリア十五玄義図」と極めて近似した描法が見られた。「元和」殉教図は、長崎のセミナリオ画家らがマカオで描いたといわれ、長崎と大阪との作品関連性も注目に値する。現存数の少ない当時の作品の、物質面からの基礎情報は確実で貴重な資料となる。先行研究が少ない分野であり、記録資料との並行研究で描画技法史上空白部分であるキリシタン時代の描画技法の具体的情報が集積されたと考える。
