労働災害は従来労働衛生学・労働法学的視点からの研究が比較的多くなされたきた。本研究はこうした研究方向性を補完する物として社会学的、なかでもエスノメソドロジィ的視点を導入して労働災害の社会的意味を探求する試みであった。すでに、アメリカ・イギリスでの研究から労働災害の認定が社会的秩序化のプロセスであるとの示唆が提出されていることが、基礎的文献資料の検討から明らかになった。なかでもBaccusのタイヤ・ホイール事故の研究は労働災害に関する社会学的研究に新しい方向性を与えるものとして評価できた。労働災害を社会学的に分析する場合、その発生原因の探究が解析の中心になるだけでなく、その認定過程もまた一つの重要な分析対象になる。実際日常業務の中では多くの労働現場で作業マニュアルどおりの作業が忠実に行われているわけではない。本調査の際にもいくつかの職場で工具等がその場、その時という作業員、作業場の都合に合わせた使い方がなされることが見受けられた。さらに、作業の意味自体が、作業員の解釈を受けて「隠されて多義性」を含んだかたちで作業が進行することが見られた。(この場合でも作業自体は問題なく遂行されることがほとんどである。)このような場合、労働災害が生じると災害の原因、及び作業員の過失等の認定に関してきわめて曖昧な領域が生じる。そして、このような認定プロセスは社会的現実感の構築というプロセスときわめて密接な関係を持つものであることがわかった。また、いくつかの事故報告を概観してみると事故の報告過程が社会的リアリティを構築させるかたちで形成されてくることがわかる。さらに、過労死などの場合は、このような社会的カテゴリー自体の社会的認知過程が新たに問題化されることが分析された。
