本研究は、日本人大学生の英作文能力の説明要因を実証的に抽出することを目的としている。先行研究では別々に研究されてきた諸要因を同時に比較・分析し、さらにその教育的応用を考察する。このために、70名の被験者の英作文能力、一般英語能力、日本語作文能力、英語説明文に関するメタ知識をそれぞれ測定し、更に「書くことに関する背景調査」及び「書くプロセスに関する調査」を行なった。測定結果を統計処理(回帰分析)した量的分析の結果、(1)英作文能力を説明する要因として、一般英語能力、日本語作文能力、メタ知識の全てが統計上有意である、(2)これらの要因のうち、単独で寄与率が高かったのは、一般英語能力(52%)であり、2番目に高かったのは日本語作文能力(18%)である、(3)メタ知識は、わずか11%だが説明力がある、ことがわかった。更に質的分析として、70名の被験者の中からgood writers(20名)とpoor writers(23名)を選び、両群の書くプロセスと書くことの背景(書くことに対する態度や学習歴)に関して、統計的に比較を行った。この結果、good writersの書くプロセスの特徴として、(1)日英両語で、書いている間、全体の構成に特に注意を払っている、(2)good writersの書いた日英両語の作文の長さが長いことから、書く時にfluencyがあることが推測される、更に、good writersの書くことに関する特徴として、(3)poor writersより、英語で学校に提出する作文やレポートなどを書くことに対して困難度が低い、(4)1パラグラフ以上の自由英作文を高校時代に規則的に書いた経験を持っている、ことが明らかになった。これらの結果から、メタ知識を教えたり、まとまった量の英文を規則的に書く経験を積ませれば、英作文力向上につながるのではないかと考察したが、実際の指導を通して検証する課題は残された。

The purpose of this study is to explain the English writing ability of Japanese college students. The first study is to compare and analyze the main causes of education and to investigate the application of education.
