川崎市立多摩病院産婦人科の協力を得て、同病院で誕生した新生児20名を対象に泣き声を録音し、同時に唾液サンプルを採取した。新生児の覚醒時に1回10分の録音セッションを各被験者につき、計10回行い、各々のセッション開始時と終了時に綿棒により唾液を採取した。録音した泣き声は、ソナグラフによって分析を行い、基本周波数成分のピッチ・ピッチの変動幅等の合計13個のパラメーターの各セッションごとの平均値を算出した。同時にRI法により、唾液中のコーチゾル量を計量化して、その値と有意に相関を示す音響パラメーターを探索した。その結果、音そのものの高さと呼気が鼻から抜ける程度(nasality)という、二つのパラメーターだけが、有意に相関を示すことが、明かとなった。すなわちコーチゾル量が高いほど、音は高くなりかつnasalityの程度も増加する。また、同一被験者の音声ではあるが、コーチゾル量が異なる時期の泣き声を、成人に聞かせて評定を求め、乳児の生理的状態の変動を成人が泣き声を手がかりにして認知し得るか否かを検討したところ、コーチゾル量が高いときの泣き声ほど、成人はより緊急度の高い声であると判断することが判った。さらに、その判断の手がかりとしては,nasalityの方が音の高さより重要らしいことが、示唆された。鼻から大量に空気が出ていくような泣きは、聞くものに病的という印象を与える傾向が高いことが判明した。泣き声を支配している生理的メカニズムの、外界適応性がうかがえた。
