標記課題について以下の3種類の史料の分析と解明を試みた。1)マケドニア朝下の宦官フィロテオスの著した「官職一覧」、2)宦官に関する諸法令(ユスティニアヌス法典、レオン6世の修正勅令)及び3)宦官に関する文学的史料。これらの史料の分析から明らかになった点は以下のようにまとめられる。1)宦官はビザンツ帝国の誕生から滅亡まで、常に宮廷或いは教会にあって一定の政治的役割を担っていた。独裁者である皇帝は、常に絶対的に信頼が置け、しかも彼の地位を脅かさない側近を必要とし、その為に宦官のような存在は彼にとっては不可欠と言えた。一方の宦官は出世のためには独裁者の絶対的な庇護を必要とし、この為に彼は他の臣下の真似できないような方法で皇帝の信頼を得ようとつとめた。2)宦官の手術を禁止する法律は全ビザンツ時代を通じてある。しかし時代が下ると共に罰則は緩やかになる。明らかに宦官に対する需要が増加していたことを示している。3)宦官に対する蔑視と偏見は全ビザンツ時代を通じてみられる。しかし時代が下ると共に宦官擁護論(オフリダのテオフラクトス)も出てくるようになる。こうした宦官は中国の王朝にも見られる所である。今年度は、中国史の丸山講師を研究協力者に得て、ビザンツ宦官との比較研究のため「唐代の宦官の制度と特徴」なる研究報告を得た。丸山報告は、ビザンツ宮廷における宦官の制度と特徴をより深く理解する格好の研究報告である。この度提出する標記研究課題の報告書には、和田報告「ビザンツ宮廷における宦官」と丸山報告「唐代中国の宦官」の2編を収録してある。
