中世源氏物語注釈は主として公家と連歌師によって行われてきた。本研究は、このうち研究が遅れている連歌師の方に重点を置いている。先ず、連歌師の注釈の特徴を内容面から確定する必要があるので、両方の注釈を比較検討して、相違点、類似点を明確にする作業を進めた。この結果に基づいて資料を全国の図書館・文庫に求めて調査に出かけた。連歌師の源氏物語注釈史上、顕著な特色を為しているのは宗祇<1421-1503>と宗牧<1545-没>の注であることが、ほぼ動かないところまで把握できた。宗祇注は実態が報告されているが、これを原典で確認している中で、彼の源氏学に大きな影響を与えたのは従来指摘されてきた兼良の他に宗砌、正徹の二人であることを確信するに至った。この三人の注がたまたま、尋流抄にまとめて書載されている。尋流抄は戦前、発見された当時注目されたが、其後ほとんど顧みられなかった。今回、宮内庁書陵部・歴史民族博物館に所蔵されている該書を調査して資料として蒐集して宗祇注に与えた影響の考察を急いでいる。一方宗牧注は休間抄に採録されているが、宗祇注のように注目されていない。しかし、中世末期から江戸初期にかけての源氏物語注釈、或は享受史における貴重な資料であることが、絽巴抄、林逸抄の同期の注釈書と比較すると明らかである。このほか花屋抄などにも考察を進めて、宗牧に始まる里村家の源氏学の注釈史おける位置づけを行うつもりである。連歌師の注釈活動は、彼等の連歌創作活動と不可分の関係にある。連歌作品が連歌活動の面から、公刊されている記録類を頼りに側面から源氏物語史の解明につとめた。
