昨年度に引き続き、近代における自我の覚醒とその展開過程を、イギリス・ロマン派の詩人たちからヴィクトリア朝の小説家の作品の中に具体的に辿る作業を行った。石幡は、第65回日本英文学会(1993)での発表「Mary Wollstonecraft」の女性教育観」を更に発展させて、Mary Wollstonecraftの北欧紀行における自我意識を考察した。女性の意識改革と社会改革を結びつける彼女の理念は、省察と疑問という自己の内面の吐露を経て初期の詳論より複雑になると同時に、自我意識と自己教育の展開を見せてWordsworthなどのロマン派的自我の予兆を示すように思われる。今秋『鈴木善三教授退官記念論文集』に英文で掲載予定である。Robinsonは、P.B.Shelleyの劇作品The Cenciを取り上げ、女主人公ベアトリーチェの描写においてShelleyが、汚れなく、罪のないベアトリーチェと、置かれた境遇によってたまたま自己破壊的な復讐に駆り立てられる、悲劇的人物としてのベアトリーチェの間で曖昧な表現をしていることに着目し、そこにShelleyの女主人公の運命との共謀性を把えた。原は、ヴィクトリア朝の代表的小説家であるCherles Dickensにおける自我意識の展開とそれが小説におけるリアリズムといかに関連するかについて研究を行った。そして特にロマン派の詩人たちの自我形成の表現が小説的リアリズムの中に取り込まれた結果、18世紀の小説とは質的に異なる全く新しいジャンルとしてのヴィクトリア朝小説が生まれるに至ったことが確認された。大友は、ヨーロッパにおける近代的自我の覚醒とその展開過程を歴史的に辿り、ヨーロッパでは18世紀末、フランス革命、アメリカ革命、産業革命という近代の3大革命が進行する頃に、人間の個人的生き方を助長する、政治的、経済的、社会的、思想的状況が生まれて来ること、それに伴ってルソーを初めとして19世紀以降近代的自我覚醒に基づく自伝が盛んに書かれるようになることを明らかに、更に両者の関係について研究を進めた。いずれ、これらの研究は、まとまり次第紀要、学会誌、著書などで発表して行く予定である。
