ロマン派からヴィクトリア朝にかけての英文学の歴史的展開を、作家の自我意識を中心として、教育、政治、社会問題等の外的な影響の検証を通じて研究し、今まで明らかにされていない両時代間の関係を有機的に解明しようとした。ロマン派詩人とヴィクトリア朝小説家との間にはジャンル間の断絶がある一方で、自我意識の形成と展開という、深層での継続性が極めて強く見られる。これについては、文学テキストをより大きな社会・歴史的テキストの中で捉えてテキスト間の比較対照を行い、この問題の本質を立体的に解明しようとした。本年度は、19世紀前半の膨大な資料の中から、重要と思われるテキストをできる限り厳選して取り扱いつつ、資料の収集と分析を行いながら、先行する研究の批判的再検討によって基本的な理念の確立をめざした。研究代表者大友は、ロマン派からヴィクトリア朝への移行期について一次資料および二次資料を収集分析を進めた。原と石幡も、それぞれの専門に応じてヴィクトリア朝およびロマン派の一次資料および二次資料の比較研究を行った。これらの資料の収集整理にあたってはコンピュータを利用した電子テキストの活用によって時間の節約と作業の効率化をはかった。さらに不定期に集まって、研究組織全体の共同作業として各自が収集・研究している資料に関する突き合わせと問題点の整理および明確化を行った。その際、研究者であると同時に現在英国文壇で活躍する中堅の詩人でもある研究分担者Robinsonを中心として、作家の創作活動における自我意識の形成と、その想像力への影響に関して討議を行い、ロマン派およびヴィクトリア朝作家の自我意識の問題の対照的再検討を進めてきた。このように、各研究分担者は二つの時代の文学における、歴史的な継続性と断絶との二つの観点を中心として資料データの蓄積を行い、それらの研究情報の交換を通じて基本的な統一理念の形成を試みた。
