1950年代にイギリスで意識された「ム-ヴメント」と呼ばれている文学運動は、汎イングランド主義をかかげた国粋運動であった。「ム-ヴメント派」のなかで実作上の中心人物は、詩人フィリップ・ラ-キンであった。ラ-キンの作品に対して、70年代と80年代に、アンドリュー・モーションとバ-バラ・エヴァレットが、フランスの象徴派詩人、ことにラフォルグとマラルメの影響を指摘してから、ラ-キンの国粋主義と「ム-ヴメント」派のEnglishnessが再検討されなければならなくなった。しかるに、細かく作品を検討してみると、ラ-キンに対するフランスの影響は皮相にとどまり、文学の本質を形造るようなものではない、と思われる。すなわち、確かに‘Maiden Name'のような中期の作品に、翻訳に近いほどの、フランス象徴詩からの借用がみられはするが、それらの借用は、初期の‘Wedding-Wind'や晩年の‘The Life with a Hole in it'などにみられる、イギリス文学からの借用に較べて、特に重要な意味をもってはいない。また、‘High Windows'にあたえたマラルメの影響についても、マラルメの助けを借りて成立した非現実の世界への超越も、外国文学の助けを借りずに成立した、他の詩(‘Here'など)における同種の超越に較べて、差異をもってはいない。ラ-キンのEnglishnessは、フランス象徴詩がなくても成立していた。フランス象徴詩は、自分の世界を成立させるためにたまたま準拠した、一つの便法であった。ラ-キンが借用した外国文学は、それがなくては自分の世界が成り立たないものではなく、Englishnessの国粋性を損なうものではなかった。この点が他の「ム-ヴメント」派の詩人、文学者にあってはどうであったか、ひいては、Englishnessの形成に外国文学がどのような影響をあたえたかは、今後の課題である。
