「ガヴァネスであるレディ」の置かれた曖昧な社会的立場と心理的コンプレックスが、小説という文学形式の中で「レディの理念」をめぐって、あるいは結婚によって結ばれる男女の関係について、時代の文化理念の何を顕在化させているか、また職場としての家庭に外から入っていくガヴァネスの物語が人間関係のドラマにどんな新しい可能性を導入しているかを、1839年から1898年までの19世紀の主要な小説において考察した。その結果、ほぼ60年にわたるイギリス小説の発展の中で、ガヴァネスが実にさまざまな顔を見せてきたこと、すなわち、社会風俗の観察者からはじまって、社会的上昇を狙う女ピカロ、心情の世界の勝利者、あるいは道徳的優越者へと変貌し、最後には抑圧された女性性のシンボルへと展開してきたことを明らかにした。それとともに、この<外>の世界から<内>の世界への展開過程を通してガヴァネスという家庭の中のタブ-の女が、イギリス小説の枠組みをどきように広げ、イギリス小説の世界をどのように肥沃にしてきたかを考察した。研究結果の一部は中公新書『ガヴァネス-ヴィクトリア時代の<余った女>たち』(1994年9月刊行)に発表されている。

Finally, the development of women's sexuality has been suppressed. The development process of the world from outside to inside is explored through the development process of the family from inside to outside. The results of this study were presented in a new book,"The Age of the Dead"(September 1994).
