1880ー90年代、いわゆるニュ-・ウ-マン・フィクションと呼ばれる一群のイギリス小説には、伝統的な理想の女性像というべき「家庭の天使」像に代わって「新しい女」たちがヒロインとして登場してくるが、1)こうした「新しい女」たちの出現が、結婚制度、大学制度、キリスト教、女性観など、ヴィクトリア朝後期社会の基本的制度および概念の問い直しを意味し、新しい性のモラルと女性観の追求に他ならなかったこと、2)また「新しい女」たちが従来隠蔽されていた女の「性」と「知」を顕在化したことが、「女性性に対する世紀末特有の恐怖」を生み出し、かつ今世紀初頭における「無意識領域への探求」をうながしたこと、3)「新しい女」の性格と意識、およびそれらを描く小説手法に、「伝統的」要素と「革新的」要素の二つが混在し、両者の不調和の中に小説の領域の拡大がうかがわれること、の三つを明らかにし得た。
