近年、市場経済のメリットないし優位性が強調されているが、市場経済が普遍的であった19世紀に、シスモンディは、市場経済万能論が持つ理論的弱点を指摘する重要な問題提起をおこなっている。これを過少消費説の誤謬として一蹴に付すのは、あまりにも皮相な理解である。シスモンディの再生産論には、ひとつの規範ないし理念型としての「順調な再生産過程」がある。これが、彼がスミスから受け継いでいると自ら認識する点である。しかし彼は、現実がこの規範から乖離し再生産過程が攪乱することを強調して、スミス理論の修正を主張した。かくして彼の経済理論は二重構造となった。後者を論証するための彼の論理は、生産と消費の両面から展開される。一方は、人々の欲求の限界を論拠にした消費制限論であるが、欲求への着目は、ヘレンシュヴァントの「人為的欲求」を受け継いでいる。他方は、市場をめぐる生産者(諸資本)の競争による生産過剰必然論である。これは、後のマルクスにつながる。生産物の一部を自己の消費と蓄積(生産の拡大)のいずれに振り向けることも可能な裁量権を生産者が有するかのごとく捉えられているのは、カンティロンやセ-にみられるように、生産者を企業者と把握しているからであろう。ところで、再生産の内部に現実に生産と消費の不均衡を必然的にもたらす要因があるならば、その回避は経済外要因に依らざるを得ない。その方策としてシスモンディは、分配の平等化と生産の人為的抑制を提言し、制度や政府の役割を強調する。これが彼のディリジスムである。それはフランス経済学史のひとつの伝統であるが、18世紀の産業主義からみれば逆方向の主張である。シスモンディが欲求に関連して限界効用逓減法則ともとれる論述をしている点は、近現代の経済学との継承関係をみるうえで興味深いし、信用が再生産と富の拡大にたいする幻想を惹き起こすとの主張は、現代にもなお生きている重要な指摘である。
