Eight yeast strains were isolated from water samples as a depth of 5.0m in Lake Vanda in Antarctica and their identification and application for low temperature treatment of organic matter were investigated. These strains are obligate psychrophilic and fermentable for many sugars such as glucose and sucrose. It was concluded that the eight strains were classified into the same and a new species in the genus Candida from the view points of their morphological and physiological characteristics, coenzyme Q system (Q8) and G+C content (53%). The strain successfully degraded synthetic wastewater at 0 and 5゚C.The reduction of TOC,Kj-N and Total-P after 3 days of incubation was 71.5-79,73.2-79.9 and 95.8-100%, respectively. Removal of Total-P was efficiently observed. Production of biomass per TOC was about 0.9 and the biomass contained about 42% of crude protein.
