近年一部の地域で、林家自身による間伐など素材生産への取り組みが盛んになってきている。本研究の課題は、そうした林家自身による素材生産が、(1) 戦後造林木が間伐期に入ったことに対する対応にすぎず、主伐期に入れば衰える一過性のものなのかどうか、(2) 現在一部地域に限られているものが、更に広がり、一般化していくものであるのかどうか、(3) もし一般化していくものであるとすれば、それを可能にする条件整備はどうすれば良いのか、以上3点を明らかにすることである。研究結果の概略は、以下のとおりである。(1) 林家の自伐は、当初は、採算に合い難い間伐材生産を、可能な限り費用を掛けずに実行しようとするところから始まっている。林道・作業道の開設・延長と林内作業車等の導入により、初回間伐はともかく2回目、3回目ともなれば、一定の自家労賃部分を得ながら実施可能となってきている。こうした間伐材生産は、その延長として齢級の高い素材の抜き伐り的生産に変化していくものと思われる。皆伐による主伐材生産については、将来においても専門の素材業者が担当するであろうが、現実には、皆伐はほとんど行われないと想定される。したがって、林家自身による素材生産は、一過性のものではなく、継続される可能性が高いものと思われる。但し、現在の担い手が高齢化していけば素材生産の性格上継続困難となろう。後継者問題がうまく解決できるかどうかに係わっているといえる。(2) 現在一部地域に限られている林家の自伐は、戦後造林木が成熟し、採算が合うようになってくれば、それに従って、広がりを見せるものと予想される。(3) 一般化を可能とする条件整備は、常識的ではあるが、育林生産過程の技術的向上による林木の単価の上昇と林道・作業道の開設・延長と林内作業車等の導入による生産コストの軽減、さらには比較的若く元気な担い手の存在である。
