[Study on Changes in the Surface Amorphous Layr of the Articular Cartilage and in the Subchondral Bone in the Unstable Rabbit Knee Joint] Two weeks after sectioning the anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament in the right knee joint of a rabbit, the surface layr became irregular and, in places, deficient exposing the underlying collagen fibril network. Intensity of safranin-o staining in the cartilage decreased, cell clusters were formed, and the periarticular synovial tissue started replacing the cartilage. At 1.5 months, digestion of the cartilage progressed from the superficial zone to the deep zone, creating fissures and ulcers in places. From this point on, proliferation of the subchondral bone became statisti-cally significant in bone morphometry. Progression of the degenerative change with time was observed at 3 and 6 months. This finding is contrary to results of previous studies reporting the absence of effective repair or progressive degeneration in partial-thickness cartilage defects.
