本研究では,敗戦間際から敗戦後にかけて,日本の植民地・占領地において,あるいは引揚げ途上で孤児となった引揚孤児の状態と,政府・同胞援護会の引揚孤児対策事業の実態を調査し,敗戦直後の数年間における子供の極限状態の解明を試みた。引揚孤児は一般に上陸港においてほぼ収容されたという点で,他の事由による戦争孤児とは取扱い状況が異なっていた。本研究では,戦争孤児対策を引揚孤児施設における保護の実態を軸に解明した。研究実績の概要は以下のとおりである。1.浮浪児・戦争孤児に関する新聞(全国紙・地方紙)・雑誌・週刊誌などの記事を収集し,浮浪児・戦争孤児とりわけ引揚孤児に関する世論の動静を調査・研究した。2.『舞鶴地方引揚援護局史』など各地方引揚援護局沿革史により,引揚げ当時の孤児の実態を調査・研究した。3.恩賜財団同胞援護会資料,ならびに同会設立にかかわる引揚孤児施設の沿革資料・引揚孤児名簿などにより,引揚孤児の実態を調査・研究した。特に,恩賜財団同胞援護会引揚孤児名簿を本籍・引揚前の居留地・上陸港・孤児となった事由・年齢・性別・収容施設などの項目にしたがって,整理・解析した。4.北海道富良野「国の子寮」など民間の引揚孤児施設ならびに擁護施設の沿革資料を収集し,浮浪児・戦争孤児なかんずく引揚孤児の実態と保護事業の歴史を調査・研究した。5.行幸記念誌・道府県史・市町村史・新聞などにより,昭和天皇の戦後行幸と引揚孤児施設視察の記録を収集し,引揚孤児が保護・恩恵・憐憫の対象として最もふさわしい位置にあったことを調査・研究した。
