本研究は、カースト族譜文献の解題付き所在目録を作成し、その過程で収集された資料を分析することで族譜の基本的性格を詳らかにし、研究方法論の確立を図ることを目的として推進された。結果として、南アジアにおいて19世紀以降刊行されたヒンディー語・ウルドゥ-語・ベンガル語・マラ-ティー語・グジャラート語・パンジャーブ語・英語で記された1310点余の文献の所在が確認され、その書誌情報がデータベース化された。前3者の言語と英語については、ほぼ資料の総体が画定されたと思われる。その他の言語に関しても全容を把握する手懸りが得られたと確信する。この作業成果は、科学研究費報告書として刊行された(『カースト族譜・系譜・家族史文献所在目録(1996年版)』)。また、族譜に依拠した研究をインド社会史研究のなかで正当に位置づけるために、1955年以降に刊行された関連研究書の目録をあわせて編纂し刊行した(『カースト及びインド社会論関係研究図書目録(1995〜1995年)』)。一連の作業によって、この数年来推進してきた族譜文献研究のための基礎環境作りは完了したと考える。今後は、書誌データに補訂を加えるとともに、集積した資料の分析を進め、近代インドにおける社会の変容過程を解明することが課題となる。手始めとして、その一端は、歴史学研究会1996年度大会において報告される(論題「ア-リヤ・サマージのカースト再編運動」)。詳細は今後発表される論考に譲るが、次の点を研究成果の要点として確認したい。(1)族譜は、イギリスのインド社会観を反映した植民地支配制度への意識的対応として編纂され、ア-リヤ・サマージに代表される復古的社会宗教改革団体が推進した社会再編運動のなかで数多く刊行された。時としてそれは、ヒンドゥー教の護教運動の意味を併せ持った。(2)従って、カースト団体と族譜をエリートによる利己的かつ一過性の企図物とみなす観点は修正を要する。
