伊豆-小笠原、マリアナ島弧-海溝系は、東方から太平洋プレートが西方のフィリッピン海プレートの下に沈み込んでおり、この地域にみられる地質現象は、この沈み込みによって支配されている。具体的には、東から西に向かって、海溝、前弧域、火山フロントで構成されている。前弧域の中で海溝斜面ブレークには蛇紋岩海山群で象徴される蛇紋岩ダイアピルが発達しており、蛇紋岩海山内部に捕獲岩として沈み込み帯深部の高圧変成岩類が含まれている。海溝斜面ブレークより西側の前弧海盆には砂泥互層(前弧海盆堆積物)が形成されつつある。沈み込み帯深部では、高圧変成域が発達していると考えられる。沈み込むプレートによってもたらされる含水堆積物からは、上盤マントルに水が供給され、大量の蛇紋岩が形成されている。高圧変成域にはこの蛇紋岩がダイアピル(浮力による上昇体)として貫いていると考えられる。一方、本研究で主に調査を行った北海道神居古潭帯では、1.変成帯と並列して同時代の前弧海盆堆積物層(蝦夷層群)が分布し、この蝦夷層群には蛇紋岩や変成岩由来の砕屑物が含まれる、2.変成帯の内部あるいは変成帯に並列して高圧型変成岩の岩塊を含む蛇紋岩帯(蛇紋岩メランジ)が発達している、3.変成帯内部には、堆積性の蛇紋岩や古い変成岩の岩塊(沈み込み帯循環物質)が地層中(より低変成度の変成岩)に含まれる、などの特徴が認められ、これらは基本的に伊豆-小笠原、マリアナ島弧-海溝系の構成とよく対比しうる。本研究によって、昔の沈み込み帯の化石ともいえる陸上に分布する高圧変成帯周辺の地質構成が、活動的沈み込み帯で現在発生している諸現象を反映した結果であることが明らかとなり、今後の変成帯研究および活動的沈み込み帯研究に新しい見地が与えられたといえる。
