1.大都市圏の住宅における和室の使われ方等を把握するため,すでに予備調査を行っていた 236サンプル(阪奈間の都市集合住宅のうち,平面のなかに和室を1室もつ住宅)について,和室の使われ方を生活機能別に類型化した.和室の主な使われ方は,主寝室,客間,予備室の3系統に大別された.その使われ方別に,和室に対する緒意識(和室の必要性,床材としての畳の評価,部屋としての和室の評価等)を明らかにするため,詳細な住み方調査を数十例についておこなった.その結果,和室を必要としないライフスタイルの居住者の存在が明らかになった.その一方で,就寝やくつろぎ,さらに接客などの多様な生活機能のために,和室を積極的に必要とする居住者の存在が明らかになった.さらに,和室を住宅内におけるゆとりの趣味的空間として,また和風のインテリアを有した鑑賞空間としてとらえるという,新しい住様式,住意識の存在が明らかになった.2.新しい「和室」意匠のあり方を考察するため,近年の住宅雑誌(『新建築』住宅特集の創刊号1986年5月号〜1995年12月号の約10年間に発行された 116冊)に発表された住宅作品 636サンプルを対象に「和室や和風空間に対する新しい意匠の試み」を収集しその分析を行った結果,次のようなことがわかった.和室を構成する各エレメント-天井,壁,開口部,床飾りについてそれぞれに新しい意匠が存在し,とりわけ,開口部(とくに障子の意匠),床飾りのしつらい・材料に種々の新しい意匠が出てきていることがわかった.畳は,縁なしの「半畳」畳が多用されたり,矩形以外の多角形の形をした畳の意匠も見られ,建築家やインテリアデザイナ-などの新しい意匠の模索と,居住者の新しい住要求を反映した,従来の和室意匠を逸脱した新しい意匠が,近年,急速に出現してきていることが明らかになった.生活機能別に,具体的な和室の意匠を提案するのに有用な知見を得た.
