住宅平面の計画において,これまであまり関心の払われなかった更衣様式(衣服の着替えに関する生活様式)に着目し,衣生活の面から住居のあり方を考えようとした.(1)着衣服の状態と住空間を対応づけ,更衣,衣服慣習の側面から,日本住居特有の公私領域構成を明らかにし,日本的「公私室型平面」を考えるキ-ポイントを導き出そうとした.さらに(2)住居内における更衣の行われ方を調べ,平面型や各家族習慣などから更衣様式を類型化し,それに対応した,合理的な更衣空間と収納空間,収納方式のあり方を明らかにしようとした.大阪の大都市圏域の奈良市,生駒市の住宅地ー9地区に立地する独立住宅(286戸)と集合住宅(344戸)を対象に,衣生活からみた住み方(衣生活の実態,更衣様式の実態,衣類の収納実態)と,それらに対する居住者の評価(意識と意見)をきく質問紙調査を行った.有効総サンプル数は408である.以下のような諸点を明らかにした.(1)欧米住宅では,寝間着姿の領域は私室空間(寝室など)に限定され,衣生活の面でも,生活秩序と「公私室型平面」に明確に対応しているのに対し,本調査から,例えば公室(食事室・居間)で更衣をしたり,入浴後には食事室で上半身裸姿,寝間着姿でいるなど,日本的な更衣,衣服慣習が指摘され,これらの日本的慣習に対応した住宅平面計画の再検討が必要である.(2)更衣には,主寝室,子供室,予備室,洗面脱衣室など複数室が使用される.とくに居間での更衣が目立ち,これは日本住居に特有の生活現象といえ,平面計画の上で,居間近くに更衣・収納空間を配慮することの必要を明らかにした.さらに,収納空間に対する居住者の不満は高く,それは収納容量の不足と,収納空間の位置に対する不満に起因していることがわかった.合理的な更衣・収納空間計画に資する,例えば以上のような,種々の知見を得ることができた.
