项目摘要

2015年度は、国立天文台水沢アーカイブズの基盤を整備するため、緯度観測所関連史料の所在調査、収蔵庫環境の調査と改善、資料台帳に入力する識別用写真の撮影、一部貴重資料のデジタル化、史料に関する聴き取り調査・文献調査、研究会・学会・国際シンポジウムでの研究発表、市民向けの講演発表会や写真展覧会の企画・開催を行った。所在調査の結果、緯度観測所から国立天文台水沢VLBI観測所へと引き継がれた観測機器・観測記録・解説パネル・帳簿・写真・音声テープ・書簡等で構成された史料群の全貌が初めて明らかになったほか、500枚以上におよぶ記念写真ガラス乾板や数十枚の明治大正期建築図面を発見するという予想外の成果もあった。また、緯度観測所関連史料の多くに保存環境問題に起因する劣化や汚損が確認されたため、収蔵庫環境調査結果を国立天文台水沢VLBI観測所に報告し、その対策を同所に助言したうえで、一部史料を温湿度・紫外線照度がコントロールされた図書庫に移して中性紙製保存容器に収納した。史料群の中でも歴史的価値が高く、不可逆的な劣化・破損の危険性も高い史料（手書き原稿、青焼き図面、ガラス乾板、音声テープ等）に関しては、資料台帳に入力するための識別用写真だけでなく、高品質なデジタル複製も作成した。緯度観測所の元所員とそのご遺族らの協力を得て、聴き取り調査と文献調査も実施した。特に、高齢化が進む緯度観測所元所員の証言は極めて貴重な歴史的情報であり、戦前写真の被写体特定に大きく貢献してくれた。また、「ガラス乾板で蘇る緯度観測所の記憶」と題した市民向けの写真展・講演会を岩手県水沢で開催し、「緯度観測所コレクション」が科学史だけでなく郷土史にとっても貴重な文化資源であることを市民らに訴えた。これらの活動により、国立天文台水沢アーカイブズ構築の基盤を整備するという2015年度の目標は、概ね達成することができた。
