本研究は、極北系モンゴル遊牧民の極限環境下における環境適応戦略の解明を目的としている。現地では古より受け継がれてきた生存戦略・減災術の伝統知(TEK)が運用されてきた。本研究では、次の3つの調査系統を実施し、伝統知の詳細な体系化を試みている。系統①：極限環境下で生き抜く伝統知の記録・収集、系統②：家畜行動と牧畜生産性の特定、系統③：家畜管理技術の計数化・可視化フィールドワークでは、2016年7～8月に初動調査を実施し、同年10月、12月、2017年1～2月の調査によりデータ収集を行った。具体的には、調査系統①T1～T3では牧畜世帯50家族に対面式の構成的インタビューを実施した。この聞き取り調査により、①家畜管理技術、②減災術、③移動頻度・適地選定プロセス、④禁忌・伝承、などの生存戦略と環境適応術を宿したオーラルヒストリー49件を収集した。また伝統的な薬草利用とその知識については、SS1／SS2であわせて41件を特定した。調査系統③T4～5では、SS1～SS4居住の12名11日間の活動量・労働投下量測定を実施した。方法論としての有益性を確認した。また対象地で調査を進める過程で、遊牧民の家畜をめぐるユキヒョウによる獣害被害の現状が明らかとなった。そのため、極限環境で生じる自然災害の一部として追加調査を行った。初年度調査により、【目的①】 「遊牧民の在来知の体系化」に要する多くの知見が得られた。これにより環境適応力と減災力を強靭化した「環境共生型牧畜」の確立に一石を投じることとなる。さらに【目的②】 「極限環境下での生存戦略の解明」に必要とされる基礎的なデータ収集および方法論の妥当性が確認された。今後は、異なる居住環境下に応じた環境適応術を横断的に解明し、社会評価の新たな研究モデルを提示する。とくに、ミクロレベル(宿営地規模)での牧畜世帯の災害対処術を詳細に解明する。
