日本を含むアジア海域の歴史に関する国内、国際研究ネットワークの形成と拡充、若手研究者育成など研究組織面での成果に加えて、研究内容の面でも、長崎研究を活用したアジアの港町における異文化交流の実態、政治と経済の関係からみたインド洋海域と東アジア海域の性格の違い、同じ海域に属する広州と長崎という二つの港町における外国人への対応の微妙な相違とその後世への影響などの諸点を明らかにし、次の新たな共同研究計画につながる多大な成果を挙げた。
