平成29年度はキプロス島をフィールドとし平成30年3月に現地調査を行った。事前の文献調査でキプロスでは「聖母の眠り」図像が本来定位置とする西壁にない事例があることを把握していたが、それを実地で確認できた。文献では写真資料を得られなかった聖堂も多かったが、現地の古美術局及び主教座より撮影許可を得ることが出来、資料収集に努めた。Asinou村Panagia Phorbiotissa聖堂や、Lagoudera村Panagia tou Araka聖堂といった他地域でも現存作例が多くない12世紀の聖堂を始めとして、「聖母の眠り」図像を持つ聖堂を重点的に調査した。超広角レンズを導入したが、これにより聖堂内の図像配置を俯瞰的に確認できる写真を撮影することが可能となった。「眠り」図像は持たないものの、Panagia tou Aaraka聖堂と同一画家の手によるとされるPaphos近郊Agios Neophytos修道院Engleistraの内部は、非常に狭隘かつ不規則な壁面をもつがこの広角レンズにより図像配置を理解できる画像を得ることが出来た。興味深い作例としてPaphos近郊Geroskipouに在るAgia Paraskevi聖堂が挙げられる。北壁には「磔刑」が描かれるが、それは以前に描かれていた「聖母の眠り」を塗りつぶす形となっていることが、剝落した「磔刑」の一部から「眠り」図が覗くため分かる。北壁自体が「眠り」図として異例の配置であるが、聖堂装飾を塗り直す際、別の場所に描き直されたものと思われる（現存せず）。キプロスにあっては「眠り」図の配置が安定しなかったことを示唆する作例と言えよう。今回の調査で得られた資料を比較検討し、キプロスにおける「眠り」図の特色について、さらに過去に調査したジョージア等と合わせ辺境における図像の諸相について論文を執筆予定である。
