本研究ではこれまで実施してきたビザンティン美術における「聖母の眠り」図像研究を承けつつ、より聖堂内の多様な主題へ視野を広げ図像間の関係を問うものである。特に従前に調査を行ってきたカッパドキア（トルコ）での知見から、中期ビザンティン期の図像に検討の余地があるものと考えられたことから、この時代の作例へ重点を置きたいと考えている。一方、辺境には中央の情報が遅れて入ってき、またそれが後の時代にも保存されるという考え方から、ビザンティン辺境の聖堂装飾を考えることで古い時代の定型を探る材料としたい。22年度はフィールドワークの対象地としてカッパドキア、及びラコニア（ギリシア）を選び、それぞれの聖堂装飾を調査した。現在「神殿奉献」図像に関心を持っていることから、本主題について特に重点的に調査を行った。中期から後期にかけての図像について、これまで収集した資料と共に検討し、横断的な視点により論考を纏める予定である。またラコニアでは岩窟聖堂を調査し、今後同様の環境であるカッパドキア聖堂との比較を行いたいと考えている。また本研究のフィールドと関連して、長塚安司東海大学名誉教授（故人）旧蔵の調査資料を筑波大学図書館情報メディア系の村田氏と共同で管理、調査することとなった。1970年代～90年代にかけ日本の調査隊がビザンティン聖堂を実地調査したもので、カッパドキア、ラコニアの聖堂資料を数多く含むものである。これは本研究に重要であるとともに、ビザンティン学全体にとっても極めて有益な資料となる。本研究では本資料のアーカイブ化と活用も考えていきたい。
