ソフトマターの自発的な巨大階層構造を自在に設計し試作するために、構造形成のメカニズムを時間・空間両面からの理解することを目標とし、"創る"・"知る"・"操る"の3つの視点に分けて研究を遂行した。主要な成果といては、2種類の液晶秩序が共存する穴あきラメラネマティック相の発見、分子的な構造色物質を用いた蛍光増強効果、などを成功させた。
