A Study of Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language by CALL

This research was planned as a university-to-university cooperative research of the international scientific research. Japanese side is Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT). Chinese side is Tianjin University.Two researchers were accepted from Tianjin University, and the practice of CALL was done in the first year of the research period concerned. The present condition of the language teaching by the Japanese domestic computer was experienced. Then we succeeded in communicating by the personal computer between the laboratory of Tianjin University and the laboratory of TUT.The character change of Japanese language and Chinese language couldn't be done at the time of the appearance of the Internet and E-mail. IE 4.0 and the development of global IME could dissolve the circumstance in 1999. The difficult point of the change of Japanese character and Chinese character was dissolved.Two researchers were sent from Japan to China in the second year research period, and the communication experiment by the computer was done. An experiment transmitted a voice and a stationary image. Connection conditions by the Chinese domestic computer could be grasped as a result.A computer server was put on the Japanese country. We tried to connect to it from China and could do the operation experiment of the CGI program. It was found out that it was possible to use the Internet for Japanese language education by using the computer putting on the OS of Japanese edition for Win98 in both countries.The class interchange to practice the language teaching, which the Internet in the remote place was further used for, was done. A class subject is a "intercultural communication". Chinese students learning Japanese send E-mail from china and this experiment had a good result.
