This study of the Holy City of Mecca and its local political power, the Meccan Sharifate, suggests a unique model of Islamic sovereignty. They played an important role in the Islamic history both politically and economically. Because of their presence, the Arabian Peninsula worked as a connecting point of the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean until the Modern Age.
