项目摘要

本研究の問いは「子どものいのちが失われるかもしれないという状況で、子どもと家族は何に希望をもち、何を支えに生きるのか、生きる強さは何によるものなのか」であった。問いの核心は「なぜ、このような文脈で子どもと親は生きられる・生きるのだろうか」となり、本研究は「生きる」ということの内的メカニズムを探求する研究となった。本研究では生きる希望や支え、強さを包含して「生きる力」とし、主にがんで子どもを失った母親の生きる力の特性やその変容の軌跡を探求した。その結果、その軌跡は“母と子がともに生きる世界観” (コアカテゴリーは【母親であり続けるということ】）、“希望と時間の意味づけの変容” (コアカテゴリーは【希望と絶望の矛盾に折り合いをつける】）、“母親であるというアイデンティティの変容” (コアカテゴリーは【無意識に変容される“母親”の定義】【苦しみからの一時的解放を許す他者の存在と支え】）で構成され、それらが密接に関連しながら生きる力を生み出したり、維持したりするプロセスであることが示された。この母親の生きる力は、壮絶な子どもの病との闘いのなかでも常に、どこかに存在し、子どもとの死別を経験した後も確実にその力を保っていた。生きる力の軌跡のコアカテゴリーの【母親であり続けるということ】とは、実在的な母親という意味のみならず心理社会的にも霊的にも母親であるという超越的な性質を持ち、子どもとの死別後もゆるぎなく母親を支え続けていた。母親の生きる力は、絶望的な文脈においても子どものために生きなければならないと母親を後押しし続けるような、母親自身の社会的価値を、自ら意味づけることで生み出された力で、母親が本来持ち備えていた普遍的な強さが逆境のなかだからこそ発現したものであると考えられた。この概念は、究極の苦しみのなかを生きる人間の生きる力の説明や理解をも可能にする発展性をもつと考えられた。
