本研究は、図（科学的グラフィック）の体系的な分類法の不在を解決するために、①既存の図の分類法の批判検討と、②図のデザイン学的分析を行い、それらを総合した上で③図の分類法と分類体系の構築を試みるものである。各専門分野で別々に試みられてきた図の分類法に一貫した指針を与え、ダイアグラム・地図デザイン教育に役立てることのできる論理的基盤を形作ることを目標としている。初年度は、科学的グラフィックの分類法の研究の準備段階として、まず「①既存の分類法の批判検討」の対象となる既存の分類方法について資料収集を行い、入手できたものに関しては順次レビューを開始した。次に、「②図のデザイン学的分析」に関しては、分類の対象となる資料の収集（特に主題地図関連資料）と整理を行い、分析を進めている。特筆すべき事項として、20世紀前半に体系的な図表言語体系を構築したオットー・ノイラートの図表集『Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft（社会と経済）』（1930年）の詳細な観察を行い、サイン体系の記号論的・修辞学的分析や、主題地図の地図学的分析（投影法、起伏表現等）を行った。また、同じノイラートのデザイン規則についての理論書『International Picture Language』（1936年）や、視覚的教育資料、百科全書についての論文を翻訳し、理解の助けとした。これらは図像読解の論理的記述の範例とすることができるだろうと考えられる。さらに、研究の主たる分析対象ではないが、東洋の図像群（宗教的図像群、コスモロジー、地図等）についても資料を収集し、知見を広めている。「③図の分類法と分類体系の構築」については次年度に本格的な作業に入る。
