项目摘要

2022年度は、20世紀前半の科学哲学、特にC. D. ブロードの哲学との関連からホワイトヘッドの「思弁哲学」の確立の過程を探った。まず、ブロードの『科学的思考』を読解し、そこでの問題意識や「思弁哲学」への評価を確認した。その結果、ブロードが「科学隆盛の時代において哲学の存在意義を示さなければならない」という危機意識を持っていたこと、そのうえで彼が哲学を、科学の基礎概念の分析を行う「批判哲学」と、宇宙論を構築する「思弁哲学」とに分け、前者こそがこれからの哲学が取り組むべき仕事であると主張していることが明らかになった。このことを踏まえ次にホワイトヘッドの講義録の読解を行い、彼のブロードに対する評価を確認した。科学に対する哲学の役割とは何かという問題を彼がブロードと共有しながらも、ホワイトヘッドはあえてブロードが否定的であった「思弁哲学」の立場を引き受けていること、「仮説」「新しい合理主義」「想像力」、ヘルンレの「総観的ヴィジョン」などの概念を用いて思弁哲学の再定義を行っていることを明らかにした。以上の研究成果については、関西哲学会第75回大会で「ホワイトヘッドの「思弁哲学」の形成について―C. D. ブロード批判の文脈から」という題目で発表した。またこれに加えて、昨年のシンポジウムの内容をもとにした論文「T. P. ナンとホワイトヘッド」を投稿、『プロセス思想』22号に掲載された。本論文は20世紀初頭の哲学者ナンとホワイトヘッドとの接点が「われわれの日常的な経験世界と科学が扱う対象の世界との隔たりをどのように埋めるか」という共通の問題意識にあったことを指摘するものであり、ホワイトヘッドの「思弁哲学」の形成の背景を別の角度からも補強するものである。
