本研究は、19世紀末フランスで活動した画家グループ「ナビ派」と象徴主義演劇の旗手「芸術座」を核とした文芸サークルにおける「装飾的」なる概念の考察を通じて、当時の美術と演劇の理念的交差を検証するものである。初年度にあたる本年度は、新型コロナウィルス感染防止対策によっていまだ海外渡航が困難な状況にあったため、現状で進めることが可能な資料の収集・調査に注力した。ただし予定していた国内出張による作品・資料の現地調査は、本務との兼ね合いにより実施不可となったため、二次文献の収集とオンラインリソースによる調査が中心となった。これらの二次文献の整理・分析により、19世紀末の画家と装飾芸術をめぐる研究動向を把握することができた。またオンラインで閲覧可能な資料にくわえ、これまでの調査で収集を終えている資料の整理・検討作業も行うことで、今後の研究の基盤を整えた。上記の作業は本年度中に論文等の具体的な成果物として発表できなかったため、次年度の課題とする。ただし、本研究課題に関連するテーマを調査する機会があり、その成果は報告者が企画と主担当を務めた展覧会カタログ所収のエッセイとして公表に至った（「モーリス・ドニ、内なる眼がみたブルターニュ」『憧憬の地 ブルターニュ ― モネ、ゴーガン、黒田清輝らが見た異郷』展図録、国立西洋美術館、2023年、27-32頁）。また本研究課題にとって重要な関連領域である象徴主義文学の研究班からの招待発表とその後の議論により、研究を進めるにあたっての新しい視点を得ることができた（共同研究「ポスト=ヒューマン時代の起点としてのフランス象徴主義」班例会、2022年10月9日、京都大学人文科学研究所）。
