本研究課題は、「障害を生み出している／障害が存在するのは個人の体ではなく社会である」というDisability Studies（障害学）の「社会モデル」の考え方に基づき、英国ヴィクトリア朝小説に登場する障害者と障害を持たない人物（以下、非障害者）の関わりを検証するものである。2022年度の研究成果として、日本ギャスケル協会第34回大会での研究発表「ギャスケルとジョージ・エリオットが描いたdisability」が挙げられる。本発表では、ヴィクトリア朝を代表する女性リアリズム作家エリザベス・ギャスケルの小説『ルース』（1853年）と、エリオットの小説『フロス河畔の水車場』（1860年）に登場する中産階級男性障害者の表象や、彼らの非障害者との関わりについて考察した。両作品において、中産階級男性障害者はヴィクトリア朝において「女性的」とみなされる気質を持つ人物として描かれていた。厳格なジェンダー規範に基づくヴィクトリア朝において規範からの逸脱は彼らが「他者」となる大きな原因の一つであり、非障害者の差別や偏見を助長していた。加えて両小説では、障害を持つ登場人物は共感力や洞察力が非障害者より優れた人物として描かれていた。両作家の違いとしては、エリオットの『フロス河畔の水車場』に登場する障害者が社会の周縁に位置付けられ、家族を含めた共同体の人々との交流が希薄である一方、ギャスケルの『ルース』では障害者がよりコミュニティに参加する様子が描かれていた。この成果については今後論文にもまとめ、発表する予定である。
