これまでの中間言語の語用論研究および日本語と英語の比較文化語用論研究では、過去40年にわたり、母語話者と外国語話者の発話スタイルの量的な比較研究、すなわち頻繁に使用される言葉遣いのパターンについての研究分析が中心的になされてきた。しかし一方で、それらの特徴と発話場面における発話者の事態把握認知や対人配慮の有り様の関係については、まだ殆ど研究が行われていない。そこで本研究では、① 日本語母語話者が日本社会の中で人間関係を含む様々な事象をどのように認知しながら、日・英語による発話場面で起こっていることを事態把握しているのか、② 英語母語話者が英語圏社会の中で人間関係を含む様々な事象をどのように認知しながら、英語による発話場面で起こっていることを事態把握しているのか、③ 日本語母語話者と英語母語話者がなにに対して配慮を行い、発話スタイル（内容と言葉遣い）を選択しているのかという３点について、実態解明することを目標とする。発話データの収集には談話完成試験とロールプレイを用い、事態把握認知と対人配慮の調査には、民俗学や文化人類学で用いられてきたエスノグラフィックインタビューを用いる。データ分析には、主に談話分析とGrounded theory の手法を用いる。本年度は、主として文献調査を行った。新型コロナウィルス感染拡大の影響により、日本語母語話者の発話データについて、本研究の中心的な調査である質的量的調査（談話完成試験、ロールプレイ）を実施することを断念せざるを得なかったため、代替策として、日本語母語話者に英語母語話者同士の会話が多く描かれているアメリカ短編小説を読んで貰った上で、会話場面に関するグループインタビューをオンラインで実施した。同インタビューデータを文字化して談話析することにより、日本語母語話者の事態把握認知、対人配慮、発話スタイルの選択に関する意識を確認し分析した。
