令和４年度は、『宇津山小蝶物語』の翻刻と読解、西村本『小夜衣』の注釈と読解という二つの作業を中心に進めた。いずれも、従来の研究史上では等閑視されてきた書簡体小説作品である。『宇津山小蝶物語』は過去に翻刻が刊行されているものの、誤りや抜けがあり大量の伏字も施されている。そのため、伏字などを施さない全文の翻刻を試み、すでに全文の翻刻データを作成済みである。令和5年度以降、所属先の紀要である『アルテス・リベラレス』に投稿を予定している。なお、本書翻刻の過程で得られた仏教離れを示唆する結末のあり方や、先行研究でも指摘されていた好色性の強調といった特徴は、近世前～中期に刊行された他の書簡体小説にも散見するものである。とくに後者については、長編物語形式と短編文例集形式という形式の差によって、その度合いに違いがあると考えている。今後この2点には注目していきたい。西村本『小夜衣』は、当初の計画にはなかった作品だが、やはり短編文例集形式の作品も分析する必要があると考えたため、計画に組み込んだものである。現在、巻3の途中まで概ねの注釈をつけ終わっている。本作は仮名草子『錦木』の二番煎じという見方が強く、その典拠の利用法等については踏み込んだ考察がされることはなかった。今回注釈をつけたところ、主として勅撰集や『源氏』『伊勢』など、近世当時に基礎的教養とみなされていた書物の利用が多いことがわかった。しかし、歌語のイメージや掛詞を正確に読み解かなければ、手紙の意図が明らかにならない場合も多く、注釈的解説の詳述や出典明記などがみられる『新薄雪物語』等よりも、想定される読者層の教養はやや上であると予測している。なお、本書は男色を素材とした文面が組み込まれる点に特徴があるが、これは後の短編文例集形式の書簡体小説『好色にしき木』や『野郎文反古』といった作品の誕生へと繋がっていくと思われる。
