荻原井泉水（1884年-1976年）は、長期間の活動のなかで厖大な著作を残したことによって、現在までのところ全集の刊行は言うまでもなく、重要なテクストの選集さえも編まれていない。本研究はそのような事情に鑑みて、主に一次資料を探索しながら、井泉水の総合的研究の糸口を見つけることを開始点とした。本研究が標石として定めたポイントは以下の三点である。第一は、短詩における身体性の問題で、尾崎放哉の極端に短い詩が現れて以降の井泉水は、呼吸という身体的リズムを追求していく。井泉水のヴァイタリズムにとっての「写生」とは単なる外在的世界の表象化ではなく、「生命」を写し取るという内面世界の表象であり、それはドイツロマン主義を正面から受容したという点で、異端な存在であった。第二は、季語論である。井泉水は季題の「超克」を訴えながら、大正初期から季語廃止を実行していくのだが、「無季」の理論的背景については自由律俳句の理解において、それほど重視されていない。有季定型俳句がそうであるように、自由「律」においてもリズムの問題は、言葉のイメージの問題と制度的には関与的ではない。そうであれば、このようなラディカルな試みを支えるものは、「自己」「自由」という新時代のクライテリアであることがまずは想定されるだろう。第三は、芭蕉を中心とした俳諧の受容である。とりわけ井泉水は、芭蕉研究においてどのような特異性があり、またそれがどのようにして彼の創作を支えてきたのかという問いについては、いまだ開放されたままである。この点については、同時代に生きた俳人たちの芭蕉受容との比較考察など、本研究課題の射程を超えるものだが、この点についても視野に入れながら、読解を進めていく必要がある。
