芳賀矢一が編纂した中等教育の国語教科書に関する基礎的研究を行った。近代「国文学」確立の立役者としてよく知られる芳賀矢一であるが、その初期の仕事として、立花銑三郎との共著『国文学読本』がある。この近代最初期の「国文学」選文集は教育界に大きな影響を与え、今日でいう古典教育の基礎を形作った。その古典教育は、国民国家における国民教育とも密接に結びついている。したがって、芳賀が編纂した中等教育の国語教科書を考察することを通して、初期の中等国語科における古典教育及び国民教育の位置づけを跡づけることができると考えられる。芳賀の仕事と国語科教育界との関わりのうち、中等教育の国語教科書に関しては、研究が進んでいない。また、そもそも国語教科書の歴史研究は、初等教育に比べ中等教育の研究が大幅に立ち遅れている。本研究はそれらの進展に資するものである。本年度、教科書を中心として研究に必要な資料の調査・収集が進み、教科書の特徴が次第に見えてきた。収集した教科書は次のとおりである。中学校用国語教科書5種（『中等教科明治読本』1905年、『新定中学読本』1911年、『帝国読本』1917年、『帝国新読本』1924年、『改訂帝国新読本』1927年）、女学校用国語教科書7種（『新定女子読本』1912年、『新定女子補習読本』1913年、『改訂新定女子読本』1915年、『女子国文』1917(1918)年、『女子補習国文』1918年、『女子新国文』1923年、『改訂女子新国文』1923(1926)年）、師範学校用国語教科書4種（『師範学校予科国語読本』1907年、『師範学校明治読本予科』1910年、『師範学校明治読本本科』1910年、『師範国文』1921年）。今後収集した教科書に対する本格的な考察を行っていく。
