This research project explores the role of metropolitan areas in the industrial development of modern Japan. Firstly, on analysing the geographical distribution of patent holders in the 1880s and 1890s, it is clarified that the main players were small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), namely, factories or shops concentrated in metropolitan areas, and Tokyo had a significant status as a hub of patenting activity. Secondly, on analysing the industrial recovery in Tokyo after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake (an exogenous shock), it is observed that (i) the characteristics of industries in Tokyo, such as diversity and preponderance of SMEs, (ii) the macro-economic downturnin the 1920s and (iii) the surge of transportation costs owing to the damage caused by the disaster resulted in the rapid recovery of industries in Tokyo.

本研究项目探讨都市圈在现代日本工业发展中的作用。首先，通过对19世纪80年代和90年代专利权人的地域分布进行分析，可以看出主要是集中在大都市地区的中小企业（SMEs），东京作为专利活动中心的地位非常重要。第二，分析了1923年关东大地震后东京工业的恢复（外生冲击），可以看出（i）东京的产业特征，如中小企业的多样性和优势，（二）20世纪20年代的宏观经济衰退;（三）由于灾害造成的损失，运输费用激增，导致东京的工业迅速恢复。
