本研究の課題は現存しない史料であるエウセビオス著『古の殉教集成』のうち、特に177年にルグドゥヌムで発生したキリスト教迫害で生じた殉教者名簿の再構成であり、その再構成によって得られる文献学的成果に基づいた、エウセビオスによる生ける殉教者・告白者たちに対する個人名抹消行為の解明というであった。研究遂行者（大谷）は平成24年12月に京都大学にて開催された第11回古代史研究会大会にて「初期キリスト教における殉教記録の改竄？」のタイトルの下研究成果の一部を中間報告として公開するとともに、本研究課題と研究遂行作業手順の妥当性を確認した。その際、出席した初期キリスト教史研究者、古代地中海世界史研究者から、現段階における『古の殉教集成』テキスト再構成案について概ね承認を得た。同時に、本研究開始段階で上記学会後に予定していた『古の殉教集成』からの派生テキストを納めた写本検討作業に比べ、『古の殉教集成』中で研究遂行者が注目したルグドゥヌム迫害と同時期のローマ帝国におけるキリスト教徒迫害政策とそれに対しての初期キリスト教会の対応を記した同時期史料との比較を文献学的に行う作業の重要性についてアドバイスを受けた。そこで研究遂行者は『古の殉教集成』の再構成作業と同時に、殉教者・告白者の個人名抹消叙述を行ったと推測される初期キリスト教著作家のうち、177年ルグドゥヌム迫害と近い時期に執筆活動を行っていたテルトゥリアヌスに関しても検討を加え、その叙述における政治的側面の大きさについて確認した。なお、その一部は史料紹介として「テルトゥリアヌス著『スカプラへ』―ローマ帝国後期の北アフリカにおけるキリスト教と帝国」の題目で『歴史と地理　世界史の研究』2013年5月号に掲載予定である。
