Using liver biopsy, hepatitis was induced in mice with coline-deficient diet for 4 weeks, but not in mice without coline-deficient diet. Serum level of taurine decreased in mice with coline-deficient diet for 4 weeks. In mice with coline-deficient diet for 8 weeks, liver tissue showed cirrhosis from hepatitis.In cirrhotic mice, moreover, serum level of taurine decreased compared with that of hepatitis mice. Therefore, serum taurine would negatively be associated with liver fibrosis in mice. In human as well as mice, serum level of taurine was negatively associated with liver fibrosis. We thought that serum level of taurine would be a predictive marker of liver fibrosis.
