The field observation in Sagami Bay and off Shimoda, Japan has been carried out to assess the seasonal changes in the primary productivity and the composition of photosynthetic products. The relation between the primary production process and the vertical transport process of organic matter has been also studied.1) The primary productivity at the center of the Sagami Bay showed maxim in October and April. This strongly suggests that the primary productivity primary depended on the supply of the nutrients due to the vertical mixing of water mass.2) The contribution of carbohydrates in the photosynthetic products tended to increase in summer period. Nutrient depletion in upper layer in summer is likely resulted in the increase in the contribution of carbohydrates.3) The export ratio, which is calculated from the production rate and the sinking rate of organic matter measured off Shimoda, exhibited unusual high values around 1. The lateral transport and resuspension of sediment organic matter are probably main reasons of the high export ratio.4) Carbohydrates showed the high export ratio more than 1, fatty acids, on the other hand, exhibited the low export ratio around 0.3. This results clearly shows that carbohydrates concerns the formation of the sinking particles and play an important roles in the vertical transport of organic materials.
