In the term of reconstruction of a university hospital, effects of environmental changes on conditions of staff and patients were investigated.1.Subjective assessment of hospital environment concerning to facilities and equipment by patients and nurses were investigated in new and old wards. Air conditions, illuminance, and sound level were measured. In result, many improvements in new wards were found. Main problems were air conditions concerning to smoking corner, elevators, and single rooms, which were improved later and should be reevaluated.2.We observed the changes in formaldehyde concentrations just before and after the start of the new ward activity. High concentrations were measured just before the start. At the start, the concentrations were lowered by ventilation system of the ward.3.The analysis of gas samples using gas chromatograph mass spectrometry (TurboMass, PerkinElmer) and thermal desorption (ATD400, PerkinElmer) system demonstrated little difference between the volatile organic compounds levels in new and old wards. The background of the high values of trimethyl-benzene should be further studied.4.In results of a cross-sectional study, the score of Self-Rating Depression Scale of nurses in old wards was higher than in new wards. However, further studies are neccessary.
