バングラデシュは世界の最貧国に挙げられている。急速な都市化と高い人口増加率によって、世界最大規模の貧民街(スラム)が首都圏内に形成され、経済社会開発と都市環境にきわめて大きな課題を提起している。住民、特に母子の健康と栄養に与える影響が憂慮されているが、スラム自体のマンモス化による人口問題が急速に進む中において、詳細な実態は明らかにされていない。本研究では、1971年の独立戦争後に形成された旧スラム街であるRayer Bazaarと1988年以降に形成された新スラム街であるVeribadhの2地域を調査対象とした。本年度は社会経済状況と環境衛生状態及びリプロダクテイブヘルスについて5歳以下の乳幼児を持つ母親162名(Rayer Bazaar 82名 ; Veribadh 80名)に対して聞き取り調査を行った。その結果、Rayer Bazaarの方がVeribadhより家族収入、識字率ともに高く、トイレや上水道の普及率も高かった。これはスラム形成上の歴史的背景によるものと考えられる。また両スラムの母親とも結婚年齢、初産年齢ともに若年(10代)であり、乳幼児死亡率と5歳未満児死亡率も高いのが特徴であるが、VribadhとRayer Bazaarとでは統計学的有意差が見られた(p(3C)160.05)。Veribadhの方がRayer Bazaarよりも結婚年齢、初産年齢ともに若く、乳児死亡率と5歳未満児死亡率は高かった。これらより、社会経済と環境衛生の状態がリプロダクテイブヘルスの要因となっており、スラムと非スラム間のみならず、スラム間においても形成時期により違いがあることが判明した。13年度は、スラム周辺のストリートチルドレンとスラム街に住む7才から15歳未満の子ども300人(ストリートチルドレン150人;スラム街150人)に対し社会経済、環境衛生に関する聞き取り調査を行った。現在データを翻訳、入力中であるが、13年12月、研究代表者である大森絹子の死去により研究廃止。
